Do you want to know to get good picture? And what makes a good portrait? And, in general, what makes good picture of a person?
A lot of it is in choosing a right background!
A-ha! Now let’s get into what makes a great background for your photo so even YOUR MOM can take it!
Sure, you can hire a pro, but what if it’s not in your budget right now and you still want to have nice pictures done for, say, your anniversary or save the date card? You can always give the camera to your mama while you can control the environment with those tips!! The results will be surprisingly good, trust me!
Get ready to mark this post so you can find it later when you are ready for your location scouting! Pss… the same rules are also “very applicable” to your wedding venue hunting!
1. Absence of distractive elements.
Choose a place where you don’t have visual competitors to YOU! It’s YOUR session, after all! Everything on the image should lead the eye to YOU, not a gigantic red modern art sculpture near you. Hey, have your mom ever made you to take pictures with something funny? (I accept awkward too 😝)
Mine was – pink blow up dinosaur at a gas station (and I’m pretty sure I already turned 28 by then) 😄 We were on the road to Big Bend and stopped to get gas. My mom’s like: let’s take a picture with a dinosaur. I was wearing my PJ pants for a long road comfort, just to say 😳 I look at the pink monstrosity and immediately agree! Why? Because I know a secret – and now you too: nobody will ever notice my pants, clothing, face expression, or me at all when I have IT in the same frame with me 😁
OK, let’s move to the next one!
2. You should be VISIBLE against the background.
Another words, don’t stand in your blue jeans in-front of a blue wall. 👕👖🔷
My personal favorite – white walls, just like on the picture! And they are surprisingly hard to find too!
3. Follow the VAMPIRE RULE: sunlight is your enemy, not friend.
My mom thinks that everything and everyone looks better on the sunny side ☀️ And I love my mama dearly, but… NOBODY looks good when sun blasting in their face.
I repeat: NOBODY. EVER. 🧛🏻♀️ Even soft shade is much better choice!
